Today, instead of going to my friend’s house or to the mall, I went down town. I met Paul Kirnet. When people first see people like Paul, the first thing that comes to their head is “Oh, he’s homeless” or “He’s too lazy to get a job”. Paul, and I’m sure plenty of others, had a story. Paul was very educated, still is. And was going to school for computer work, until his mom became very ill. He said he was trying to get money and keep everything together until the money started disappearing. Then he became ill and goes to the hospital every now and then. Life is very rough he said, and he told me even through all the bad things in life, to keep your head to the sky. And keep your head high. This made me smile. He complimented me on my clothing a couple times, and I told him a few things about me. Paul was very friendly, didn’t complain, and probably was one of the most easy-going and interesting people I ever met. Every time he smiled, I smiled. It felt like he could have been a close friend, or family member. It’d been 30 minutes into our conversation. I grabbed my bag quick, opened my wallet, and all I had was 20’s. I handed him a twenty dollar bill and he looked surprised, and paused then smiled. Thanked me a couple times, and grabbed my hand. And we made a promise to make sure he buys something he always wanted, which was a coffee. We laughed. I asked his name, and would he always be around here, then walked back to the car. Paul might not have the finest clothes, best life, or nicest background. But in the end of the day, he was still smiling. And one the happiest people I’ve seen in a long time. Paul is an inspiration, but the one thing I remembered from today is to “Keep your head to the sky, no matter what happens in life.” – Paul Kirnet. ♥
